Melford lies on the western side of the Strait of Canso. It has untapped potential for the development of large scale industrial projects and marine terminals. The ice-free deep water port is adjacent the 14,500-acre Melford Industrial Land Reserve. The Maritimes & Northeast Pipeline (M&NE) currently has ” pipelines passing through the Melford Industrial Park.

The Strait of Canso Superport Corporation, in partnership with the GCRDA; Municipality of the District of Guysborough and the Municipality of the County of Richmond recently completed a Master Plan for the Strait of Canso. Melford Industrial Land Reserve
This 14,500 acre industrial property is owned by the Province of Nova Scotia. As outlined in the Port Master Plan referenced above this location is of strategic importance to the Province of Nova Scotia = particularly for industry that relies on marine transportation.
