Business Case

The Opportunity

Remember what happened in Aberdeen, Scotland ? Large gas reserves were discovered nearby and the community, almost overnight, became a major supplier of jobs, services, housing and investment to industrial development. It's happening again, this time in Guysborough County, Nova Scotia, Canada. Guysborough County is a 4,370 square km county located along the Eastern shore of Nova Scotia, Canada. Goldboro, Guysborough County is home to the SOEP gas plant and the start of the Maritimes and Northeast Pipeline.

The people of Guysborough County are committed to developing the economic opportunities that will sustain their communities into the future.

Why Guysborough County ?

Available Land – Two Industrial Nodes

The Municipality of the District of Guysborough's 1500+ -acre industrial park sits adjacent the SOEP gas plant. The Municipality has recently acquired a further 600 acres which includes marine access for deep water terminal development. A further 14,500 acres of industrial land reserve of the Melford area sits along the western side of the ice-free deep water port of the Strait of Canso .

The development of new road and marine terminal infrastructure further enhances the competitive advantage of the Goldboro Industrial Park .

Proven Track Record

The construction, completion and operation of the SOEI offshore Energy Projects gas processing plant and associated sub-sea and Maritimes on-shore pipelines proved that projects could be completed on time and within budget.

Regulatory and Environmental Precedents Set

Previous developments in the area provide substantial savings, both monetary and in the regulatory process, to the prospective investor in areas of environmental approvals and through governmental regulatory precedents. Access to environmental information is readily available.

Pipeline Corridor Established

An undersea pipeline corridor has been established from the offshore Scotian Shelf into Goldboro and this that can accommodate further pipeline infrastructure and power cable routing.

Supportive Community

Community support for industrial development is overwhelming. Surveys conducted by both the GCRDA and Municipality of the District of Guysborough indicated that county residents determined economic development and jobs as the top priority.

Convergence of Natural Gas Supply

The development of key infrastructure has facilitated the convergence of gas supply at this Goldboro providing not only the critical mass but diversified sources of energy for investors.

The Investment and Trade Office has targeted a broad range of business opportunities for promotion and attraction including:

  • High energy intensive industries
  • Co-generation
  • Petrochemicals; producers can now access sufficient natural gas liquid supply for petrochemical development
  • Dry or liquid commodity transportation
  • Secondary industries that capture by-product of plant waste including but not limited to CO2 capture for greenhouse, waste heat capture for land based aquaculture, and hydrogen
  • Marine services
  • Port Development along the western side of the Strait of Canso
