At a news conference held April 16, 2012 at the MODG’s Municipal Offices, Minister Charlie Parker announced the approval that will allow MODG to purchase, install, and operate four 50 kwh wind turbines under the NS Comfit Program.

“The District of Guysborough has some of the best wind resource available in the Province”, states Warden Lloyd Hines, “As such, it makes perfect sense that we invest in the resource and with this project, the Municipality will reap a very reasonable return on its’ investment.”

MODG has entered into a contract with Seaforth Energy Ltd. for the supply and installation of the wind turbines. MODG will be purchasing the turbines out of its own financial reserves and as such, there will be no debt financing associated with the project.

The Guysborough County Regional Development Authority (GCRDA) Investment and Trade Office were instrumental in developing this project. Investment and Trade Manager, Gordon MacDonald worked to develop the RFP and submit the project for consideration.

The Municipality recently amended its’ Municipal Planning Strategy and Development Regulations to allow the installation of wind turbines in most all areas of the Municipality.

“We now have some of the friendliest wind regulations in the Country’’, continues Hines, “We’re open for business when it comes to wind development and we want prospective investors to know that coupled with a good wind regime, there is an open-minded welcoming Municipality to back it up.”

MODG will be installing the four wind turbines during the summer months, and it is expected that they will be on line by this fall.

Guysborough County Regional Development Authority (GCRDA) met recently with the Council of the Municipality of the District of St. Mary’s to review the draft of the 2012-2017 GCRDA Strategic Plan. GCRDA Staff Dan Gillis; Gordon MacDonald; Christa Rae Webber; Ashley Williams; and Carmel Avery-MacDonald along with board Chair Rennie Beaver presented the draft plan to council on February 15, 2012.

The GCRDA has been working on this strategy since summer 2011. The GCRDA took a phased approach in developing the plan. Input was gathered from the public over the summer and analyzed and shared at a leadership forum in October. Consultant Ryan MacNeil facilitated the session and developed the draft plan after the forum. Further input was gathered by the GCRDA board of directors. The final draft was prepared and presented to the Municipality of the District of St. Mary’s. Copies of the plan were sent to the Municipality of the District of Guysborough, the Town of Canso and the Town of Mulgrave for review.

The GCRDA 5 Year Strategic Plan will be available on our web site after March 31, 2012.
